Many children don’t have any cavities and the majority only have a few cavities.
The dentist can be a fun and interesting experience.
Child-friendly offices have children watching movies while reclining in the dental chair and receiving lots of motivational stickers and prizes.
However, not all children are so lucky.
**There are 2 & 3 year olds with baby bottle caries- mouths full of deep dental caries who need hours of extensive dental work. Such a young child is incapable of being compliant with the treatment they need.
**There are older children, some with hyperactivity or autism who also can not physically stay still without physical restraints.
**The other category of children who can not endure their necessary dentistry are those children who have been previously hurt and traumatized. These children were harmed physically and emotionally, they no longer can trust adults and be vulnerable.

Why sedate?
A routine practice in pediatric dental offices employs a hard board with straps to “papoose” a young
child. This immobilization is useful for emergency rooms or in other dire circumstances but not
repeatedly on the same child. Often children are papoosed while fighting, crying, gagging and even
vomiting. The feeling of being tied up without being able to move or protect yourself with your hands
and arms is a humiliating experience.
No child should be physically coerced by adults while trying to fight back with all their strength.
Some children feel overwhelmed and frightened by having to endure painful dental procedures which
include multiple injections and being completely still while the shrill dental drill vibrates in their head.
